7 Piece Drum Set
7 Piece Drum Set Buying
Guide
No matter who you are or what you do, thanks
to a wide variety of drum sets available you can find
one that is just right for you. Whether you are a
beginning student, a weekend bar room player, or a
serious professional, buying the right set can make
the difference in your
performance.
How Big of a Drum Set Do I
Need?
Depending on your skill and ability most
people should be able to master a 7 piece drum set
after a while. Some very basic drum sets might
only have four pieces which is fine but most of us
like to surround ourselves with many musical
options.
So the bigger the drum set the more options
you have to produce a wide variety of sounds and
effects. Because of this I usually recommend a 7
piece drum set to almost anyone because with seven
pieces you can pretty much cover almost all types of
music you want to play.
Standard or
Fusion
Most drum sets come in two varieties the
standard, or the fusion. The main thing that
distinguishes these two different types is the
diameter of the drums. With Fusions sets the drums
are typically 10 to 12 inches for the mounted toms,
14 inches for the floor tom, and normally 22 inches
for the bass drum.
In comparison most standard sized sets have
12 and 13 inch mounted toms, a 16 inch floor tom, and
a 22 inch bass drum.
The main difference is that Fusion sets
produce more of a punchy tone and a Standard size set
produces more volume with a bigger
tone.
What type of set you buy is up to you
but generally if you like to play rock ‘n roll music
a Standard set should do. If you prefer to play jazz
or blues than the smaller punchier Fusion version
will suit you better.
Type of
Material
Most drums are made out of wood and each
type of wood contributes and unique sound quality.
For example maple is the most popular one to use for
problems and gives a nice balance sound. However
Falkata is sometimes used instead of maple because it
costs much less but still produces the same sound
quality.
Basswood is another inexpensive alternative
to Maple and still gives you a nice rich sound as
well.
Hardware
When people refer to the hardware of the
drum kit they are referring to the mounting rack or
the hardware necessary to assemble it and play it. It
usually consists of a pedal, snare stand, cymbal
stands, and anything else needed to assemble the
set.
Cymbals
Cymbols are essential component to almost
any drum set and they come in several different
kinds. Of most common types are Ride
cymbols, Crash Cymbols, Hi-hat Cymbols, and China
cymbals.
Snare
Drums
The snare drum is another essential
component to any drum set, and some drummers have
more than one in their set. These produce a nice
snappy sound and can be made of either wood or
metal.
Electronic
Drums
The big advantages of getting an electronic
drum set is that you can plug in headphones and have
been almost completely silent practice. If you have
the money to spare it would be a good idea to have a
traditional drum set and an electronic drum set for
different situations.
So when you go about buying your
7 Piece Drum Set
keep these pointers in mind.
